API
The Mattercite API.
Everything the app does is available over HTTPS with a workspace API key. API and MCP access is included with every paid plan; the free trial covers the web app. Create a key in the app under Configuration, then send it as a bearer token:
Authorization: Bearer mck_...
Base URL: https://mattercite.com/api. Answers are metered exactly like the app: each question answered counts against your plan's monthly questions.
| Endpoint | What it does |
|---|---|
| GET /api/me | Workspace, plan, and matter id (use the matter id in the paths below) |
| GET /api/matters/{id}/documents | List sources with status |
| POST /api/matters/{id}/documents | Upload a source (multipart file: PDF, Word, text, Markdown, CSV, Excel; question, answer sheets import as approved answers) |
| POST /api/matters/{id}/chat | Ask one question; returns the answer with citations, or Needs Information |
| POST /api/matters/{id}/questionnaires | Create a questionnaire from pasted questions |
| POST /api/matters/{id}/questionnaires/import-file | Import a questionnaire file (Excel, CSV, Word, PDF) |
| POST /api/matters/{id}/questions/run-all?questionnaire_id=... | Complete every answer |
| GET /api/matters/{id}/questions?questionnaire_id=... | Answers, statuses, flags, and citations |
| GET /api/matters/{id}/questionnaires/{qid}/export?format=csv|xlsx|pdf | Branded export, with or without citations (citations=0|1) |
Every answer carries its citations: the source file with the verbatim supporting passage (policy passages first, approved answers labeled with their row). Questions your sources do not support are flagged as Needs Information. The JSON API status remains insufficient; the answer text uses Needs Information.
MCP
The Mattercite MCP server.
Connect Mattercite to Claude or any MCP-capable assistant, and your assistant answers questionnaires from your workspace's sources, with cited answers and a Needs Information flag when supporting information is missing.
Endpoint: https://mattercite.com/mcp/mcp (streamable HTTP). Authentication: your workspace API key as a bearer token.
Connect from Claude
Add a custom connector with the endpoint above and the header Authorization: Bearer mck_.... In Claude Code: claude mcp add mattercite --transport http https://mattercite.com/mcp/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer mck_..."
Tools
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
| list_sources | The workspace's documents, approved answers, and generated Q&A |
| add_source | Add a text policy or a question,answer CSV |
| ask | One question, answered with citations or Needs Information (metered) |
| import_questionnaire | Create a questionnaire from pasted questions |
| run_questionnaire | Complete every answer (metered) |

File uploads (PDF, Word, Excel) go through the HTTP API; the MCP tools cover text sources and the full questionnaire flow.
Notes
Limits and conduct.
- Keys act as the workspace with the creating user's role. Revoke any key any time under Configuration; revocation is immediate.
- API and MCP access is included with paid plans (Starter, Team, and Business). The free trial covers the web app; keys are issued the moment you pick a plan.
- Plan limits apply to API and MCP usage identically: questions per month and seats. Document ingestion is unlimited.
- Questions your sources do not support come back as Needs Information. That is the product working, not an error.
Questions
Common questions.
Is the Mattercite MCP server included with my plan?
API and MCP access is included with every paid plan at no extra cost. The free trial covers the web app; create a key the moment you pick a plan. Tool calls that produce answers count against your monthly question allowance, the same as the app.
What can an assistant do with the MCP connection?
List and add sources, ask single questions, import questionnaires, run them, and read back every answer with its citations. Every answer is cited to a policy passage or an approved answer, or returned as Needs Information.
How do I get an API key?
Sign in at mattercite.com/app, open Configuration, and create a key under API keys. The full key is shown once; send it as a bearer token.
Does API usage cost extra?
No. API and MCP usage meters exactly like the app: by questions answered, against your plan.
